Sliding South

July 4th, 2006

Another great day on the water, as the fleet is now heading south. The weather will be getting warmer and the downwind ride to Hawaii has begun.

Cassiopeia continues to lead, having chosen a more westerly route than her nearest rivals, the two Santa Cruz boats, 52-foot Voodoo Child and 50-foot Horizon.

Earlier today Voodoo Child reported "Right now we're ripping along at 10 knots under the 2A (all purpose running spinnaker) in 12-15 knots of breeze. We're about 70 miles offshore and a bit south of Tillamook, Oregon".

We have received a few reports from Kinetic and Voodoo Child - be sure to check out their websites: voodoochild.net and kineticsailing.com for their perspectives and logs. And speaking of websites and reports; those boats who have not sent us reports or have not updated their websites - let us know what you're doing out there!

Two boats have now officially retired from the race. As reported last night, Black Watch returned to Victoria Harbour yesterday afternoon. As of 0915 today, Dan Matthieu, Skipper of Black Watch, notified the Race Committee that they are retiring from the race. Just as this was sinking in, another call came in. Randy "Peg Leg" Vogel called in to report that Renegade has retired from the race due to steering failure. Dan Sinclair and his crew returned Renegade to Victoria Harbour about noon today.
