Getting into Stride.....
by Peter Lagergren, June 28th, 2008
An eventful 24 hours has passed for the fleet. Something Wicked has retired and is heading due east to San Francisco at 4 knots. In the lead, Srum is beginning to leg out on the fleet, heading southwestward on the great circle route to the finish line at 10 knots plus.
The rest of the fleet still in contact are in a line abreast formation 500 miles north northeast of Strum. Red Heather has fallen off the pace that was making her converge on Strum and is the eastern most boat of the pack at 4 knots, heading southwest. To her northwest lie Zulu, Turicum, Seeker and the northwestern most boat, Passepartout.
Turicum and Seeker may be close enough to be in visual contact, at least when both are on the top of a swell. Black Watch is approximately 100 miles in arrears of the second cohort. All five boats of the second cohort are on a southwesterly track to the north of Strum's course by 100 to 300 miles. Trailing the fleet at a gentlemanly distance of 200 miles is Starlight Express.
