Outbreak has landed at Lahaina by Charlotte Gann, July 22nd, 2022 Outbreak finished at 18:20 HST on July 22; Patrick Fenton’s Nauticat 39, racing for Cascadia Yacht Club, is in the Lahaina Class of Vic-Maui where the rules allow such things as using their engine to advance their position, though this must be recorded in the ship’s log and an adjustment to their corrected time will be made by the Vic-Maui Race Committee upon finishing the race. July 22 Roll Call & Spectac Finish for ‘Round the Cans’ in the Pacific Ocean by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 22nd, 2022 This offshore race is NOT ‘round the cans’ racing. But try to tell that to Xiomara, Red Sheilla, and Planet Express. After having started on July 4 at 10 AM PDT (7 AM HST), the 3 in the fleet of 9 who began together, chose varying interpretations of the rhumb line, mostly running well down the coast to the south of California before making their way around a very variable set of conditions where the centre of the Pacific High kept trying to sit on top of them and the fleet. All three negotiated their way through remarkably light conditions, making their way back toward the rhumb line through the last week. Amun-Ra Finished After Dark on July 21 by Charlotte Gann, July 22nd, 2022 Amun-Ra finished at 20:54:00 HST on July 21, and sailed into Lahaina after dark. Ben Homsy’s Beneteau Oceanis 45, sailing for Cascadia Yacht Club, is the first arrival of a Lahaina Class Vic-Maui boat. This class allows for such things as organizing for a fee-for-service routing service and using their engine for propulsion (but recording such in the ship’s log), where an adjustment to their corrected time will be applied. July 20 Roll Call & Oscar Brand says Drinks All Around by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 20th, 2022 Gord Wylie’s XP 44, Phoenix, came alongside the docks at Lahaina a tad after 4 AM today and by 10 AM he and the crew and loved ones were together at the Lahaina Yacht Club, enjoying a meal and stories together. Meanwhile, Jan Nolan of Lahaina Yacht Club worked with the US Customs and Border Patrol to get the crew and boat cleared into the USA. All was smooth as silk. As well, Rochelle Mendoza distributed to crew their tickets for the Saturday Awards Banquet, which is proving to be super popular – tickets are now hard to acquire. Patti Link has been working with the local media, successfully getting the race profiled – we are all mindful this is the first time the Vic-Maui International Yacht Race has been run since 2018 and there’s an air of excitement at so many skilful yacht racers being in town. Phoenix Arrived in the wee hours - First Canadian Boat to Finish by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 20th, 2022 At 03:17:34 HST on July 20, 2022 the race yacht Phoenix crossed the finish line near Kaanapali and became the First Canadian boat to finish. A short while later, the boat was piloted to the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor and came alongside to the wild cheers at about 4 AM of family, friends and the team of Greeters from Sea Maui. Champagne corks popped aboard Phoenix and many hugs and kisses were shared. Read 
July 19 Roll Call & Next Boat Coming in HOT by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 19th, 2022 The Ouija board is out, fingers are touching. When asked, the Ouija board said Phoenix will be the next boat to finish; they’re about 100 nm at 3 PM HST and pushing hard and solid at 9 kts. Timing for finish – the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Dudes are keeping cool with their straw hats on. Gonna be some party tomorrow. All boats’ time allowances on YB Tracking have been updated based on the revised Peligroso time allowance. Read 
July 18 Roll Call & The Adventures of Sailing and Waiting by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 18th, 2022 Last night, a review of Peligroso’s time allowance was compared to the Notice to Competitors No. 5 time allowances and a discrepancy was revealed. Before the race began, the calculations were redone and a revision was published on June 28 but for some reason the Peligroso calculation didn’t make it to the summary revision page nor the YB tracker data. The time allowance will be revised to show Peligroso at 343 sec/mi to match the June 28 details page. Read 
July 17 Roll Call & Different Fish On The Line by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 17th, 2022 Almost all boats are in the trade winds now. You’ll see most of the fleet has done a big right turn as they have consistent winds on their hind quarter, so now making for the lay line. July 16 Roll Call & Line Honors Go To... by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 16th, 2022 This morning at 06:06:19, Peligroso crossed the finish line and the YB Tracker geofence captured the moment. Two boats from the Lahaina Yacht Club, piloted by Lahaina YC Vic-Maui Chair Lars Bertelsen and Sailing Director Ian Ponting, were on hand to safely guide Peligroso to a mooring at Lahaina and bring the happy and hungry crew ashore where they proceeded to the Lahaina Yacht Club to celebrate with wonderful puupuus and beverages. July 15 Roll Call & The Worst Kept Secret... by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 15th, 2022 Due to time constraints, Lurline has retired from the race and turned on her motor to get out of the limited winds/pressure of the Pacific High. Lurline sincerely regrets having to withdraw from the 2022 Vic-Maui International Yacht Race. Crew and skipper are all very disappointed, and thank the Vic-Maui race management, and wish all competitors the very best and god speed. Lurline is thankful for the wonderful welcome in beautiful Victoria and for the friendships formed. Boat and crew will head for Lahaina to celebrate with the rest of the fleet. Read

Most boats are sailing more slowly today, the result of the Pacific High having moved eastward near them. Many boats are running south to get away from near-zero winds at the high’s centre. July 11 Roll Call & The OxoMoxo Trophy by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 11th, 2022 We’re coming into a full moon soon – the Buck Moon, so named because this is about the time a buck’s antlers emerge. Today had great winds of up to 30 knots. Peligroso saw a moonbow last night – a refraction of suspended ice crystals or water droplets like a rainbow. All are experiencing wonderful spinnaker sailing and surfing, the winds promised in the brochure. Read 
July 10 Roll Call & Fish-eating Grins by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 10th, 2022 Winds are steady now, seas are warming up and the sound of 'Fish On' is being heard throughout the fleet. The boat speeds are perfect for teasing the blue fin tuna to come check out the lures. The fleet will NOT go hungry. Planet Express is going tuna speed (see photo below) and Flow caught their first tuna - a 20-pounder! With these fine winds, Millennium Seagull is running through squalls in steady winds - a sure sign of the trades. Amun-Ra had a run with a pod of dolphins - the dolphins won the sprint. Read |

Red Sheilla is the first boat to enter the 2022 Vic-Maui!
Red Sheilla previously competed in the 2010, 2012 and 2016 Vic-Maui races. In July 2022, Red Sheilla skipper Jim Innes will sail in his fifth Vic-Maui, following the pioneering course sailed by his father JG (Jim) Innes in 1965.
The first Vic-Maui was sailed in 1965. The race was a dream of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club member JG (Jim) Innes who, at that time, was a Captain for Canadian Pacific Airlines. Jim convinced three other skippers to start with him off Brotchie Ledge in 1965. With Jim in his Lapworth 36' "Long gone", there was Lol Killam of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club with the 45' sloop "Velaris", Ron Ramsay of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club with the 45' ketch "Norena of Wight" and Boo Paskel from Seattle Yacht Club with his 73' ketch "Tatoosh". The 1965 race and weather were typical; Westerlies in the Juan de Fuca Strait, a left turn down the coast to about the latitude of San Francisco, followed by a right turn under the North Pacific High and a gybe with the Northeast trade winds filling spinnakers for the sunny run to Maui. "Long Gone" won the first Vic-Maui with a time of 15 days, 6 hours and 55 minutes. Records have been broken many times since 1965.
The current record holder is "Valkyrie", skippered by Gavin Brackett of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, who completed the race in 8 days, 9 hours and 17 minutes in 2016.
