July 9 Roll Call & Wind Gods Deliver

by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 9th, 2022

Wind! We have wind. And it’s behind us so we’re flying spinnakers. Last night there was champagne sailing with moon, wind, and stars. Didn’t last through the night but it’s a start. Lurline’s crew have decided it’s warm enough to put away their long winter underwear and begin to sport shorts. Read

July 8 Roll Call & Awaiting the Wind Gods

by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 8th, 2022

The winds are out there – just beyond reach of most of the boats. Peligroso is seeing wind speeds at noon HST of 12 knots, are sailing at 11.2, and report the sea is .5 degree warmer with commensurate air temp increase. Lurline is under spinnaker. Phoenix is sailing along at 6.6 knots and wanting more wind. A common refrain throughout the fleet. Outbreak and Amun-Ra appear to have enough fuel to get them to Hawaii... Read

The dark spot is a breaching whale seen by Peligroso. Seas are glassy calm.

July 7 Roll Call and Whales, and Dolphins, and Sharks - Oh My!

by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 7th, 2022

Heard from the boats that winds are still variable (see TWS today) and from many directions (TWD). The barometer is stubbornly steady. All crew are in fine spirits, Amun-Ra caught their first tuna and enjoyed an early lunch. Fog is now in the rearview, it’s all sun and seas are calm. Some contemplated going for a swim but sharks have been spotted so no swimming today. Read

July 6 Roll Call and Lurline, Peligroso, Phoenix Started

by Charlotte Gann & Race Committee, July 6th, 2022

Today’s race start was a near-drifter. Glassy waters, hints of wind that didn’t materialize in time for the start. In sailboat racing you get what you get. The 3 boats today are the fast Division 1 yachts and their higher sail coverage grabs wind that doesn’t reach the sea surface so they kept some momentum. Race Committee's Rich and Chris didn’t have any over-early boats to call. Read

All is not as it seems. As RC looks out at the fleet battling very light winds at the west end of Juan de Fuca Strait, a little explanation of the situation is probably required. Read

by Charlotte Gann, July 4th, 2022

This morning dawned droopy and foggy with little wind but nothing dampened the excitement at Victoria's Causeway Marina where the 9 boats in the first fleet were putting in last minute supplies, topping up water and, most importantly, kissing goodbye to loved ones. Read
