Status on the Evening of July 09

by Guy Walters, July 9th, 2012

There are glitches in the software package we have used for the Daily Position Reports for the past several races and thankfully the Yellowbrick tracking system we are using provides an alternate for us. However, to make life a little more interesting, there are two flavors of position reporting showing up in Yellowbrick. There is one that is opened from the Leaderboard tab on the tracker, as found on this page and there is one to be found at http://yb.tl/leaderboard/vicmaui2012. The information provided is slightly different on the two pages (for example the 2100 posting shows Double Take leading on one page and Terremoto! on the other) and I’m informed that on the separate page is more accurate. Too, on the separate page, one can toggle to “Recent VMG Mode” and get a more current appreciation of how the boats are doing against one another.

The winds are stronger nearer to the coast and boats are not so much heading south to catch the trades sooner, but rather, hugging the beach to stay in the wind. However, I’m looking at the estimated finish times on the leaderboard page and thinking that the time limit is 2355 HST on July 26. At present, five of the boats in Racing Division 2 are calculated not to finish by then; nor are Ballymack and Big Ben. All is not lost – Ballymack is 50 miles nearer the finish than Radiance but is in a spot of soft air so her VMG is down and her ETA is strung out.

It is being an interesting race to date and I’m sure we will see some more shifts in the next three or four days as boats decide when to turn west.
