Offshore Weather & Routing

The objective of this course is to provide introductory training suitable for experienced sailors who are planning to participate in offshore races or passages which meet the criteria for World Sailing's Offshore Special Regulations Category 1. 


  • Introduction to Offshore and High Seas Weather, with a practical emphasis on the North-East Pacific and summer passages between Victoria BC and Hawaii. 

  • Introduction to methods and systems used for obtaining weather information onboard; with practical examples using Sailmail and Saildocs. 

  • Introduction to route optimization using navigation software, boat polars and GRIB files; with practical examples using Expedition software.  


  • One day of introduction to offshore weather, in classroom format.  

  • One day of introduction to offshore routing, in workshop format.  



  • Will be provided in class

  • Participants should plan to bring a Windows laptop computer to the second day for the routing workshop.  

Terms and Conditions:

  • More than 3 days before the seminar/class start date, you may transfer your registration to another qualified person, provided that you have notified the organizers by email to  events@vicmaui.org and received an transfer approval email.  

  • More than 7 days before the seminar/class start date, registrations are cancellable and refundable; a 20% administration fee will be applied.  

  • 7 or less days from the seminar/class start date, registrations are non-cancellable and non-refundable.  



  • Early bird registration is $300.00 per person.  
  • Regular registration is $375.00 per person.  

  • Prices are in Canadian dollars.  GST (5%) will be added.  Coffee/tea and lunch is included.
