Features for the 2012 race include staggered starts in Victoria, the addition of a double-handed division within the racing class, and the addition of a cruising class. The Vic-Maui race has been running since 1968, pre-dating cellular phones, digital cameras and scanners, personal computers, email accounts and the world wide web, not to mention social media. Family Affair is co-owned by Henning & Greta Buus and son, Thomas Buus and his wife Sandy Buus. She is a 45ft Beneteau First 45F5 built in France in 1990. We purchased her in 2007 in Los Angeles and sailed her up to Everett Washington. She was dismasted off the Northern California coast during the delivery. She now has a new rig as well as a new bottom.
We have been club racing with Milltown Sailing Association as well as cruising her in the San Juans. This will be our first Vic-Maui race, and to qualify for this race and to enhance our newly formed crew’s teamwork, we participated in the Southern Straits, Swiftsure and two of the Tri-Island Race series. One of the highlights this year was getting line honors in the Round Whidbey Race.
Most of our crew members have limited ocean sailing experience apart from ferrying boats from LA and San Francisco to Seattle, we are lucky to have one member that has done the Vic-Maui 4 times. We have had a very busy spring preparing our boat and crew for a safe ocean passage. We are all looking forward to this adventure and wish all participants a safe and joyful trip.
