Offshore Weather & Routing

This course is being offered with a new format this year.  

  • Day 1 will cover Offshore and Coastal Weather with an emphasis on the Eastern Pacific and Vic-Maui; 
  • Day 2 will cover means and equipment used for getting weather info onboard.  Also route optimization using navigation software, boat polars and GRIB files; 
  • The course will be offered twice.  

The January 16-17 course will be instructed by Eric Holden.  Eric, one of Canada's pre-eminent ocean racers, has sailed Vic-Maui, Fastnet, Sydney Hobart, Newport Bermuda, Marblehead Halifax, Maxi Transatlantic, Tour de France a la Voile, and Key West, among others.  Sailing Henri Lloyd, he was the winning skipper of the 2013-2014 Clipper Round the World Race.  Eric is a professional meteorologist, with a degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of British Columbia.  He is currently campaigning "O Canada", an IMOCA 60, in preparation for the 2016 Vendee Globe.  Eric is an authorized dealer for Expedition software.  

The March 5-6 course will be instructed by John Jourdane.  John is a world renowned navigator, with over 300,000 miles experience, including 53 Pacific crossings and 2 Whitbread Round the World Races.  A Vic-Maui veteran, John has also sailed 12 Atlantic crossings, a third circumnavigation, and events including Transpac, Vic-Maui, Pacific Cup, L.A.-Tahiti, Transatlantic, Fastnet, Bermuda, Sydney-Hobart, Capetown-Rio, Buenos Aires-Rio, Route of Discovery Race (Spain to the Caribbean),  Admiral’s Cup, Kenwood Cup, SORC, Antigua Race Week, Maxi World Championships (Sardinia), and all the West Coast U.S. to Mexico races.  Author of 2 books, “Icebergs, Port and Starboard,” and “Sailing With Scoundrels and Kings”, John is a seasoned skipper, navigator and teacher.
