Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety Jig

by Race Committee, August 14th, 2016

It has been 14 days since the big Vic-Maui awards banquet and the returning boats are starting to arrive home.

Westerly and Valkyrie are already back at home port and Longboard just entered Juan de Fuca Strait on Sunday afternoon. And as of Sunday Kinetic is leading a pack of boats between 350 to 500 miles out that includes Ion, Miles, Red Sheilla, String Theory, Turnagain, Atalanta, Canard and Amiskwi. Further back are Salient who had to return to Kauai to drop off a sick crew member and Kraken and Alegria X who enjoyed a longer stay in Hawaii. Out there somewhere without a tracker and running silent is Expresso, Forty, and Starblazer. Rain Drop has to return to Honolulu with plumbing issues and Race Committee believes she is still there along with Equus.

Conditions on the way home have varied from squalls and thunderstorms, perfect champagne sailing is sunny skies, head winds with tons of chop, absolute calms in the Pacific High and fog as boats get further north and closer to the coast. But without the stress of racing, most crews are relaxing, fishing and enjoying the trip.
